The strawberry tree is a small evergreen tree that produces an abundance of clusters of small, white, urn-shaped flowers in the fall followed in the winter by one-inch round fruit that looks like spiky balls. The fruit is actually soft and edible. When immature, the fruit is yellow. As it matures it turns to bright orange, then red. Birds love the fruit! Therefore, you don't have to worry about cleaning up messy fruit splatter.
An excellent cultivar for the Inland Empire is Arbutus 'Marina.' It has beautiful coppery bark that peels in fine strips.
